Timisoara by Weekend

4 days

  • Transport: Wizz Air
  • Departure from: Airport Ben Gurion Tel Aviv ( TLV)

Timisoara, European Cultural Capital in 2021

The proposed programme is under the theme "Shine your Light-Light up your city". 12 november 1884 was the day when Timisoara became the first european town with streets illuminated by 731 electric lights.

The vineyards of Banat

In Banat, harvesting wine grapes goes back to the times of the Roman Empire. The legends of the place say that Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, was born and raised here. The vineyards in Banat do not spread over wide surfaces, but they benefit from mild temperatures and rich precipitation.

Must see

Corvin Castle, also known as Hunyadi Castle or Hunedoara Castle, is a Gothic-Renaissance castle in Hunedoara, Romania. It is one of the largest castles in Europe and figures in a list of the Seven Wonders of Romania ( top made by the epoch times).

Day 1

On Saturday morning you’ll be boarding in Tel Aviv and in just 3 hours your destination will be welcoming you. Your first steps in the city will be led by our top local guide, making sure you dive-in quickly in the imperial history and architecture, from the Ottomans to Austrians, to Hungarians, to present-day Romania and to the city which is the European Capital of Culture for 2021. You will understand how different nations are living peacefully together for centuries and how they have shaped a multicultural environment. Passing by the rich Jewish heritage, palaces and synagogues you’ll see the testimonials of Jewish life and how they changed for the better Timisoara and surrounding region.

Day 2

For Sunday we’re suggesting activities as if you were from Banat – you could be having breakfast and might be walking and drinking coffee in the cozy Union Square, followed by shopping in Iulius Town. The city’s vibe and your mood will decide what you’d prefer. In the afternoon we’ll be spoiling you with a private wine tasting and dinner, in a beautiful landscape close to Timisoara, filled with vineyards (40 minutes by bus).

Day 3

Monday is a busy day, after breakfast we’ll have a 3 hours’ drive by bus to Deva, to taste a little bit of Transylvania. The city area is inhabited since ancient times, so get ready to go up, because Deva fortress is rising at ~300 m on a rocky hill-top. The town’s symbol, the fortress guarded the access to Transylvania, witnessing many historical events since 1269. Nowadays it witnesses most Romanian Olympic champions in gymnastics who have started here, including the famous Nadia Comaneci. Even a synagogue is waiting for us, built in 1897 and still serving the tiny Jewish community.

We’ll continue to Hunedoara nearby, where the Corvin Castle awaits us. It’s also known as Hunyadi Castle, being one of Europe’s largest Gothic-Renaissance castles.

In order to relax and connect with nature, we’ll have a picnic by the lake Cincis. Afterwards we’ll be heading back to our hotel.

Day 4

On Tuesday early morning you will just grab your take-away breakfast and hurry back to Ben Gurion. When you will be coming back, for sure you will see more.
