A taste of Transylvania: culture, history and nature
- Transport: Wizz Air
- Departure from: Airport Ben Gurion Tel Aviv ( TLV)
On your first day in the morning you’ll be boarding in Tel Aviv and in just 3 hours your destination will be welcoming you. The city’s vibe will immediately win you over. Our top local guide will walk you not only through city center, but also in the old neighborhoods of Timisoara: Fabrik – with the synagogue, the Millennium Church and the oldest beer factory in Romania, since 1718, Josefin – was the most important part of the city, with train station, the port on Bega river and a big market place and Elisabetin – with quiet streets and beautiful houses. You will feel the multicultural character of the city starting with the first hour, understanding why Timisoara was elected Cultural Capital of Europe for 2021.
Our second day will start after a 3 hours bus drive at the gates of Transylvania: the Fortress of Deva on a hilltop overlooking the city and a large valley, followed by the picturesque Corvin Castle in Hunedoara – in Gothic-Renaissance style, one of the largest in Europe and even a synagogue still used by a small Jewish community. We’ll continue to discover Transylvania, driving towards Alba Iulia.
The third day starts in the heart of Transylvania, in the Alba Iulia citadel built 300 years ago. The city is on the crossroads of history, since Roman times until now. During our short tour we will witness the traditional changing of the guards. We’ll depart for Sibiu, to be enchanted by its medieval vibe, narrow streets and elegant squares, bounded by imposing city walls and defense towers, a real pearl of Transylvania.
On the fourth day, we’ll enjoy fresh air in the middle of a dense forest, in the second largest open-air museum in the world. It is the ideal location to discover the traditional rural Romanian lifestyle while taking a relaxing walk in the middle of the nature. The 10 km of alleys will take you among village homes, workshops, small wooden churches, sheepfolds, wine cellars, wind and water mills.
Afterwards we’ll visit one of the most beautiful and best-preserved medieval towns in Europe, the old city of Sighisoara – UNESCO World Heritage Site. Strolling on the alleys will take us back centuries and let us imagine life in imperial Transylvania.
After fortresses, citadels, museums, after so much walking and history, time has come to relax. Health and nature’s wonders will delight us in our fifth day in the salt mines of Praid. We will rest while breathing the healing air in.
Today we’ll head north, to the region of Maramures. On the way we’ll admire an iconic synagogue in Bistrita, a cozy town inspiring tranquility. Jewish life thrived almost everywhere in Transylvania and its heritage can be easily contemplated.
The seventh day will open new horizons in terms of landscape, history and local feeling: we’ll discover the city of Sighetu Marmatiei followed by an emotional encounter – the house where Elie Wiesel was born, today a museum dedicated to the victims of the Holocaust and the Jewish way of life in Sighet before World War II.
On the eighth day get ready for unique experiences in the magnificent unspoiled mountains, as we’ll travel with an old steam-powered train in Maramures. Before boarding this charming time machine, we’ll have a short stop at Elefant House museum, a memorial to the once blooming Jewish community in Viseu de Sus.
The 9th day will find us heading towards Oradea and facing the difficult task to getting to know the city in such a short time. You’ll admire what the last two centuries of baroque and Secession architecture brought upon one of the most important cities in eastern Pannonia. Many administrations have passed throughout the years: Hungarian, Ottoman, Habsburg and now Romanian, but the city preserved its elegant and stylish character.
Before the ride back to Timisoara we will have a short stop at Baile Felix, the famous thermal spa resort near Oradea.
Morning moods and weather on the 10th day will decide how you’d prefer to spend the first part of the day – shopping, walking or resting. For the second part we suggest a trip to nearby mountains, to the Bigar Waterfalls, one of the 8 unique waterfalls around the globe, according to “The World Geography”. Part of a bigger National Park, it will give you a glimpse of this regions’ nature and will help you plan your next outdoor vacation here: hiking, rafting, enduro, off-road trips.
On our way back to Timisoara we will visit Oravita, a small mountain town, a former center for the Austrian administration of the region, with its interesting Old Theater.
Early morning the eleventh day you will just grab your take-away breakfast and hurry to the airport, with many new memories and a lot to think about. For sure you will feel like always coming back.
